I used to work at a restaurant that wasn’t fast food. I enjoyed it when I was your age. I’ve known people who worked in movie theaters who said they like it. Amusement parks, mini-golf, retail stores, etc. All good.

Work at a restaurant as a host/hostess or a busser. It’s decent money and when you turn 18 you have experience that could get you a job as a server, which is easy if you’re outgoing and you can make a lot more money than most jobs you can get at 18.

Why not start your own venture? My son has a lawn care operation, and he is doing well and can pick his own hours. He is his own boss, so he works when he wants, is flexible about vacations, and can pick his clients. He can extend his business into fall and winter with leaf raking and shoveling. In the spring, he starts out by cleaning up the client’s areas, sweeping sand, spreading mulch, etc. Then in the summer, he cuts lawns. With a small initial investment, you can do pretty well depending on how entrepreneurial your spirit is. Worth thinking about…

OK….do some preparatory research:

If you want to work in a departments store, make a list of all the stores in your area.

Then go on the web and do a search for each one eg.
Target, Kohls, ToysRUs and read their sections on jobs….how to apply etc….be sure to read what you will need to bring with you eg. any official papers.

Line up some references - ask 3 people, preferably people who work and who know you…if they would be willing to be references for you because you are applying for a job. It helps to have both men and women in this list. Be sure you know their ‘job title’ and place of employment.

Get their name, address, phone number.- type the information for the 3 of them on a piece of paper and bring it with you when you go to apply for the job.

Go to the stores and ask at the service counter how and where to apply for a position.

If you do not want to work in a department store - you can do the same sort of thing in local stores. Example. The other day I was in the local deli when a young woman came in and said, do you have need of any workers? I am looking for a job. I Will work hard and would be available to fit your schedule.

The woman asked her a few questions…asked for her name and address and phone [the young woman had that typed out on a card]. Owner took the card….young woman said that she would really like to work there and would be glad to do a ‘trial’ so the owner could be sure that she fit the job.

The other day I went in and there was a new young woman taking my order. Nice.

Good luck…remember the more you know about a company, the more they will believe you really want to work there…
