I have stopped eating fast food this year and began to eat healthy. I am scared for the rest of the people in our country because we are the leading nation in obesity. A lot of medical costs can be rooted to heart disease or another illness that is caused by unhealthy food choices. To make our society more healthy what can we do?

the only thing that can be done is to increase education on nutrition and health in schools and in the work place. if the parents have unhealthy eating habits statistically so do the children.
in general there is nothing that can be done in regards to protecting society from obesity. everybody knows that cigarettes are a known carcinogen yet people start smoking daily that did not previously, you can not fight free will. human beings are self-destructive by nature if not fast food it will be something else
make eating healthier cheaper - I can fill up at any fast food place for $4-$5 but if I try to eat at places that serve healthy foods I pay a lot more. also, many people eat at fast food places because they are fast. lunch breaks typically last less than an hour for people so sometimes fast food is the only option. it would be nice to see fast food places that actually serve healthy foods. Subway and other sandwich shops are heading in the right direction, but I still pay a dollar or two more per meal and eating the same thing everyday for lunch can become very monotonous. it would be nice to have a larger variety of choices.
I agree that we need to do more as a country - I think if someone could open a cheap, fast food place that served a wide variety of healthy foods, it would go over well.
All that can be done as a society is to make the fast food that is out there healthier, as they are starting to do by ridding trans-fat. The problem is that being healthy is an individual decision and most people are too lazy. The US has become an nation obsessed with convinces, and let’s face it being healthy is not a connivance. It involves actually shopping and prepare ones food (without use of a microwave, frozen food does not count), and being active (going to the gym walking etc.) I have literally have watched people drive around a parking lot for 10 minutes to get a better spot rather than having to walk an extra 20 feet. You can’t make people like that up and decide to be healthy.
